Application Instructions
All admissions materials must be completed and received by January 15. Admission materials include the Application to Graduate School; one transcript from every college/university attended; an official copy of GRE or TOFEL scores; and an application fee. In order to meet the December 10 deadline, these materials should be submitted to the Graduate School by the December 1.
In addition to the Graduate School application described above, an Application for Graduate Study in the Psychology Department is also required. As noted in the instructions for this form, the Psychology Department application must contain three letters of recommendation each including a letter of recommendation form (note that you must complete the top of this form before giving it to the person who will provide your recommendation); a curriculum vita or resume; and answers to these four essay questions:
- Please describe (a) major influences on the development of your interest in a career in psychology; (b) your previous experience serving in a helping or counseling role, (c) your research interests, (d) previous research experience, including publications or presentations at professional conferences, and (e) the career in psychology you would like to pursue, including the setting. (4 pages maximum).
- How would acceptance into this Counseling Psychology program be a good match for your values, career aspirations, and research interests? (2 pages maximum)
- (a) Describe specific experiences working with people from diverse backgrounds (e.g., ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, religious, ability status, sexual orientation). How have these experiences influenced you? (b) A distinctive feature of the Counseling Psychology program at the University of Tennessee is our emphasis on training in social justice and advocacy through community interventions and social action research. Please describe your interest in this aspect of our program, together with any experiences you have had in working as an advocate for social justice causes. (3 pages maximum)
- Describe previous leadership experiences, honors or acknowledgments you have received, research accomplishments, or any other skills or experiences not previously mentioned that you believe distinguish you as a candidate for graduate study. (1 page maximum)
[Note: Your answers to these questions should be prepared in font no smaller than 12-point, on double spaced pages with margins of at least one inch on all sides.]
These materials should be received on or before December 10, by the Graduate Secretary, Department of Psychology, 312 Austin Peay, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN 37996-0900. Incomplete files can not be considered.
