The M.A. Program in Experimental Psychology is designed to prepare students for entry into a Ph.D. program in Experimental Psychology. It may be appropriate for students who did not have an undergraduate psychology major or for students who wish to have a stronger background in coursework and research before applying to a doctoral program. Students currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program may also complete a Master's degree as part of their program, as well as individuals who wish to compliment a degree in a different field.

Admission to Candidacy / Formation of Master's Committee

The submission of the Admission to Candidacy Form also serves as the official formation of the student's Master's Committee. This Committee may or may not be comprised of the same faculty members as the Student Advisory Committee. Students must be admitted to candidacy one full semester prior to commencement, and must follow all Graduate School deadlines for submission of this form. All Departmental requirements must be completed before submission of this form. After committee members have signed the form, both the form and a copy of the student's Academic History (transcript) should be given to Connie Ogle (312D). Ms. Ogle will secure the Department Head's signature and will then forward the appropriate number of copies to The Graduate School.

Time Limits

The UT Graduate School requires that Master's degree requirements be completed within five years of being admitted. The Graduate School may be petitioned for extensions of these limits upon the recommendation of the Departmental Faculty.

Evaluations

Each year in March, the Experimental faculty reviews the progress of all students in the M.A. Program. These evaluations are based on coursework, research activities, and on recommendation of the Advisory Committee. It is essential that the annual meeting with your Advisory Committee take place prior to the student evaluation meeting.

The evaluations arrived at in this manner directly determine your status in the program. This information will be relayed to you in two separate communications: A first communication, covering the comments made by particular faculty members when making their initial ratings, and summarizing the discussion at the evaluation meetings, will be given to you in writing by the Program Director. Second, a letter from the Department Head will inform you of any decisions regarding your status in the program.
