Department of Psychology Annual Awards Day
On May 2, 2008, the Psychology Department held its annual Awards Day. This year's festivities were held at the University of Tennessee Welcome Center. The program consisted of the presentation of several annual departmental awards and recognition of faculty, staff and students.
Recipients for the annual awards were chosen from nomination forms submitted by faculty, staff and students of the Psychology Department, and based on the individual merit of each nominee.
The awards were as follows:
The Faculty Appreciation Award: (this year we have two recipients)
Todd Moore, Ph.D.
Todd Moore has been married for almost 8 years to Deb, a truly amazing woman, and they have a beautiful daughter named Anna. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee. His research interests focus on the causes, correlates, and consequences of substance abuse and intimate partner violence.
Brent Mallinckrodt
Brent Mallinckrodt received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland in 1986. In 2005, he was named "Faculty Mentor of the Year" by the Graduate School of the University of Missouri. He joined the UT faculty in 2007, where he serves as Director of the Counseling Psychology program. Brent is also Editor of the Journal of Counseling Psychology, and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.
The Staff Appreciation Award
Kim Givens
Kim Givens began working in the Psychology Department in March, 2007. Kim states that she has been extremely impressed by how friendly and gracious Psychology faculty, staff and students have been. She enjoys her job because it gives her an opportunity to interact with a variety of individuals. Kim especially enjoys that her job allows her to interact with graduate students because of their enthusiasm, energy and sense of humor.
The PsiChi Undergraduate Faculty Award
The recipient of this award is chosen by the UT Chapter of PsiChi – the National Honor Society in Psychology
Deborah Rhatigan, Ph.D.
Deborah Rhatigan is a first-year assistant professor in the department of psychology at the University of Tennessee. She studies interpersonal violence and trauma, focusing mainly on individual risk for re-victimization. Dr. Rhatigan graduated with her doctorate from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and completed a clinical internship and postdoctoral research position at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. She is married eight years and has a three year old daughter.
Additional Awards
The College of Arts and Sciences provides an award to Psychology every three years – the White Outstanding Teacher Award, open to regular faculty and elected by majors in the department. This year’s co-recipients are Debora Baldwin and Teresa Hutchens.
The Department awarded Graduate student research awards. The recipients were chosen by a faculty committee. These awards also included a monetary award.

The Department awarded one Graduate student teaching award. The recipient was chosen by the Head and the Director of Undergraduate Studies. This year’s winner of the monetary award was Jenny Clements.
