Each year, the American Psychological Foundation awards 13 research scholarships to graduate students.  Since each graduate program in the country can submit an average of two applications per year, the percentage of awards given should be around 5% of applications received (the exact percentage is not available).

One of this year\'s recipients is one of our clinical graduate students, Laura Widman, who will receive $1000.  Her research mentor is Assistant Professor Michael Olson.  This is the first time a UT graduate student in Psychology has received this national award.

The award letter is detailed below.

Dear Ms. Widman,

It is with great pleasure that I write to inform you that you have been selected to receive an American Psychological Foundation (APF) 2008 COGDOP Graduate Research Scholarship.  On behalf of the APF board of trustees and staff, I\'d like to offer my congratulations.

As the recipient of this scholarship, you will receive $1,000.  The Foundation will also publish notification of your award in the APA Monitor on Psychology and in its newsletter, Psychology Giving.  More information about your award will arrive shortly under separate cover.

The Foundation provides financial support for innovative research and programs that enhance the power of psychology to elevate the human condition and advance human potential both now and in generations to come.. We hope that this scholarship both assists you with your current work and inspires future endeavors in the field of psychology.

If you have any questions, please contact Emily Leary, APF Program Officer, at (202) 336-5622 or eleary@apa.org.

Sincerely,

Elisabeth R. Straus
