Research Interests
Etiology, course, prevention, and treatment of intimate partner violence, relationship distress, and addictions; overlap between relationship aggression and substance misuse; relationships of LGBTQ+ people; women's violence perpetration and victimization; sexual assault; cyber aggression; subtypes of partner violent perpetrators; family violence across the life span; effectiveness and treatment outcome research.
Research Statement
Dr. Stuart's program of research has a particular emphasis on the role of substance use in intimate partner violence perpetration and victimization. His work addresses a broad spectrum of factors that are relevant to the etiology, classification, assessment, prevention, maintenance, and treatment of intimate partner violence. His research has shown that intimate partner violence perpetration and victimization are overrepresented in populations of individuals in treatment for substance misuse, and that substance misuse is overrepresented in men and women court mandated to attend batterer intervention programs. His work has also shown that the probability of intimate partner violence perpetration and victimization is higher on substance use days relative to days of no substance use, and his work explores the proximal and distal variables that help to explain this relationship. His work examines the impact of treatment for substance misuse on the prevalence and frequency of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and psychological aggression, as well as the effects of substance treatment on other domains of relationship and family functioning. Dr. Stuart's work also examines whether including substance use treatments in batterer intervention programs improves outcomes for men and women arrested for domestic violence. Dr. Stuart is interested in conducting treatment outcome research in general, and specifically for family violence and substance misuse. His lab has also examined genetic predictors of intimate partner violence, substance abuse, and treatment outcome. In addition to each of his graduate students’ research projects, the lab has two current ongoing grants funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) / National Institutes of Health (NIH). One grant is a multisite, longitudinal research project that examines the temporal relationship between alcohol use, moderating variables, and dating violence in sexual minority young adults. A second multisite study, also funded by NIAAA/NIH, uses ecological momentary assessment to examine the temporal relationship between drinking and dating violence in young adults.
Mentoring
Mentoring is a core part of Dr. Stuart’s professional mission. Mentoring is so central to his professional goals that Dr. Stuart previously obtained a $1 million grant from NIH to provide extra time to serve as a research mentor. He has received numerous awards for mentoring graduate students, undergraduates, and junior faculty members. Dr. Stuart has an extremely productive research lab with incredible graduate students. He is flexible regarding the research projects that his graduate students work on, and his goal is to promote each student’s career development. Many of his graduate students have obtained highly competitive grants, including grants funded by the National Institutes of Health. The lab constantly has numerous ongoing research projects, and all of his graduate students have published articles. Currently his students are interested in topics such as: the temporal relationship between substance use and cyber aggression; substance use and hookup behavior; implicit attitudes, interpersonal aggression, and intimate partner violence; the relationship between sleep, emotional dysregulation, and aggression; the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and subsequent relationship violence.
