Kun Wang received his PhD in Counseling Psychology in 2026 from the University of Iowa. His research program broadly examines what makes psychotherapy effective, with particular attention to psychotherapy processes and outcomes, group psychotherapy, and cultural processes. Drawing from the contextual model of psychotherapy and multicultural counseling theories, his work connects advanced statistical and computational approaches with clinically meaningful questions about how therapy works, when therapy works, for whom it works, and how it can be improved for culturally diverse and underserved communities. Wang’s current projects include 1) applying Bayesian psychometric models to quantify multidimensional therapist’s effects in psychotherapy performance tasks and 2) using natural language processing, machine learning and large language models to support human and AI collaborations in psychotherapy research and training. His broader goal is to produce research that strengthens psychotherapy practice, advances culturally responsive care, and improves access to effective mental health services. Outside of work, he loves hiking, camping, fishing, skiing, and playing tennis.
