The University of Tennessee only offers the M.A. Program in Experimental Psychology. The program incorporates the following areas of research: Neuroscience & Behavior, Cognitive & Developmental Science, and Social Psychology. Experimental graduate students will acquire breadth of knowledge of these areas but are expected to identify a particular area and conduct research primarily in that area. Graduate applicants should identify the area and faculty member(s) with whom they would most like to work in their application.
Students will note that many of the degree requirements (e.g., SAC forms, doctoral committee appointment, etc.) are marked or indexed by the completion of certain forms. Each form may be obtained, when needed, from Connie Ogle, Graduate Programs Coordinator, in 312D. Completed forms should be returned to Ms. Ogle to obtain Department Head signature, filing, copying, and/or forwarding to The Graduate School.
Admission to Candidacy/Formation of Master’s Committee
The submission of the Master’s Admission to Candidacy Form also serves as the official formation of the student’s Master’s Committee. This Committee may or may not be comprised of the same faculty members as the Student Advisory Committee. Students must be admitted to candidacy one full semester prior to commencement and must follow all Graduate School deadlines for submission of this form. All Departmental requirements must be completed before submission of this form. After committee members have signed the form, students bring the form to Connie Ogle (312C). Ms. Ogle will obtain the Department Head’s signature and will then forward the document to The Graduate School.
The UT Graduate School requires that Master’s degree requirements be completed within five years of being admitted. The Graduate School may be petitioned for extensions of these limits upon the recommendation of the Departmental Faculty.
Each year in March, the Experimental faculty reviews the progress of all students in the M.A. Program. These evaluations are based on coursework, research activities, and on the recommendation of the Student Advisory Committee. It is essential that the annual meeting with the Advisory Committee takes place prior to the student evaluation meeting. Students will be advised of evaluations each year.
